Updating Our Release Strategy

DH
David HöckCEO & Co-Founder, Vendure
Last week marks a significant milestone. We've launched our new React-based Admin Dashboard, removing the last major friction point for commerce developers building complex custom setups. Everything is now in the open source, a substantial commitment for a bootstrapped company.

With this foundation complete, we're adjusting our approach to ensure long-term sustainability.

Shifting Our Focus

We're increasing our investment in commercial products around Vendure under Elevantiq while maintaining a steady, predictable cadence for open source releases. This shift is essential for our growth and allows us to continue supporting the open source project responsibly.

The reality is simple: we've pushed hard on open source features for years. Now we need breathing room to build the commercial offerings that keep the lights on.

What Changes for Open Source

Starting now, our release schedule follows a clear pattern:

  • Monthly patch releases address bugs, security issues, and minor improvements. You can expect up to 12 patch versions per year.
  • Quarterly minor releases introduce new features. We'll ship 4 minor versions annually, giving you predictable upgrade windows.

We're becoming more selective about new features. Each feature requires significant development, testing, and maintenance time. For the next two minor versions (v3.6.0 and v3.7.0), we'll concentrate on 3-4 larger features or improvements rather than dozens of smaller additions.

This doesn't mean we're abandoning open source. It means we're being deliberate about what we build.

Community Contributions Welcome

We remain committed to reviewing and merging quality pull requests from the community. Your contributions have always been valuable, and that hasn't changed.

If you see something that needs fixing or have an idea worth building, we encourage you to submit a PR. Our team will review it with the same care as always.

Why This Matters

This change gives us the focus needed to build Elevantiq's commercial products properly. A sustainable business model ensures the open source project survives long-term. We're making this trade-off deliberately to secure the future of both.

We understand this represents a shift from previous years. Our goal is to set clear expectations and maintain the trust you've placed in us. The core promise remains: a stable, powerful commerce platform with predictable releases and room for community contribution.

The foundation is solid. Now we're building the business on top of it.
